Photo Tours: With a photo tour, the main objective is photographing in a certain location. These are great for the experience of photographing with other photographers who are willing to spend considerable time at one location (as opposed to non-photographers who don't always share our enthusiasm). The amount of instruction varies greatly from one leader to another.  Many leaders still offer some level of instruction while others get you to the good places and then you're basically on your own. Photo tours vary a lot in terms of what is included.

Questions to Ask Before Making Your Selection

·          What is your experience level and are there experience expectations for the participants? Some leaders welcome folks of all experience levels, some expect you to have a working knowledge of your equipment.

·          What level of physical activity is involved and does that match your abilities? Think about this carefully because it will impact your enjoyment of the trip as well as that of the other participants. This includes the amount and difficulty level of walking/hiking as well as how many hours a day you will be with the group.

·          What amount of instruction is being offered? Do you want a lot of instruction or are you more interested in the location?

·          Will the trip leader be joining you on location or do you get a map and a time to get back together?

·          Do you know anything about your trip leader?  If not, don’t be afraid to ask around or call them and talk to them.  Most leaders want you to be a good match for their offering just as much as you want their program to be a good match for what you are looking for.

·          Is the emphasis strictly on photography or is there also time to learn about the culture and history of the location?  Will you have a local guide who can impart some local color?

·          Will there be time off to do some of your own exploring?

·          What is included in terms of lodging, food and other items and what can you expect to pay for items not included?

·          What transportation arrangements are there? Will you need to drive once you get there or will transportation be included?

·          What is the group size?

·          Anything else that's important to you.

Note that none of these considerations in themselves are inherently good or bad. They are strictly a matter of preferences. Taking a little time for some homework will make your experience much more enjoyable.

 Photo Books

We have been making photo books.  Up until now we've just been using the one hour labs to do this.  It's inexpensive and a fun thing to do.  We are now in the process of getting a little fancier, using software that we've downloaded, where we can add text and have a lot more control on the actual layouts.  We'll give you an update in the next newsletter and let you know what we've found out in the way of quality, etc.
